Borgo di Perolla Estate
History and Origins
The Borgo di Perolla estate is located near Massa Marittima, in the Grosseto area, and has a long history rooted in the Middle Ages. It was a fief owned by the noble de’ Pannocchieschi family, protagonists of Sienese and Tuscan history in the 1200s and 1300s.The ruins of the castle are an important historical testimony. The estate is rich in history and suggestions of the past; near the castle a tomb was found that some historians believed might be that of Pia de’ Tolomei, the gentlewoman mentioned by Dante in Purgatory who was probably had killed by her husband Nello de’ Pannocchieschi, lord of Castel di Maremma and podestà of Volterra and Lucca.
In the postwar period, the estate was very prosperous, widely cultivated, gave employment and housed many families from the area. Unfortunately, the circumstances of the last succeeding estates led the estate to a state of progressive abandonment and natural and social decay.
